Madam LaNouir traveled out to the West
Via steam engine, iron beast was the best!
Her mission: to purify the dens of iniquity
(By fleecing everyone in her proximity)!
Train robbers were rare, but she was uneasy,
When the train took a spur to a vicinity
That seemed isolated, fit for a hold-up.
Indeed, in a moment, three horsemen rode up!
They mugged the passengers, took Madam hostage,
Pivoted their horses to a thieves-den cottage.
To pass the time, she played them at poker.
In a week she rode off, leaving them broker!
Artie the auctioneer had seen it all, in his day.
Traders and collectors, antiquities on display.
But the day the Man in the Moon came around,
His hammer he nearly dropped on the ground!
Moon wore a calico shirt, was not a bit stodgy,
Said he'd artifacts to sell, like a rover buggy.
Main cost would be freight, he'd got them cheap,
Tho once authenticated, prices should "leap"!
Artie thought it ironic, the celestial celeb
Upheld his high status, while selling for bread.
On his client's behalf, the block he'd festoon,
And get highest prices -- he'd promised the Moon!
The LA Times Jumble had the JFK cartoon this morning. I got everything but the first word, and then had trouble with the first word of the solution, though not the second or third. So, came to your poem for help, Owen, and immediately got the solution and with that the first word. Many thanks. Totally delightful story about Artie and the Man in the Moon and their exchange--amazing how you come up with these wonderful images from just the Jumble words and solutions! Many thanks for this Sunday gift.
I was going to stay with the 6*6 but couldn't get #1(like Misty?).

Yes, I got CALICO and IRONIC but couldn't get UPHELD. I'd figured out THE MOON so the solution would have come.
Doing the lengthy Sunday xword and the blog got my time.
