Some might gripe
At dawn's early light,
And gathering round the pole.
The ritual raising
With patriots gazing
At the flag, our nation's soul.

Stars and Stripes
Are stirring sights
Rising in the morning breeze.
A flag aflutter
Like no other,
Sign of a nation that frees!

Our rights are snacks
While our country backs
Our sturdy love of democracy!
We must insist
This symbol lifts
All mankind from tyranny!

Today is Flag Day, so in a few hours I'll be doing our patriotic fund-raiser with my Lions Club of setting out flags for the commemoration.

Have a wonderful day at the fund-raiser, Owen. Lovely poem. I got all four Jumble words quickly, but had trouble with the solution. Sweet cartoon. It's wonderful to be a citizen of this country.

I remember the thrill I always felt as a kid in WWII whenever I saw our flag high on a pole. The blue field and red stripes gave me pride in our country as the “savior of the world.” Over the decades, as I learned more and more of the highs and lows of our history, my feelings have become much more complicated. But I’m still occasionally surprised by a return—with a rush—of the emotion of that simpler age.

Today’s jumble solution?
The recent D-Day celebrations were very stirring. Like most of us I can only engage in the invasion at a distance—vicariously—through books and movies. The film of Cornelius Ryan’s The Longest Day has a most memorable scene, when a lowly German soldier reaches the crest of a hill and sees for the first time the enormous fleet of Allied warships reaching to the horizon far’s the eye can see.

A REMINDER to Misty and anyone seeking a hint to the solution of a jumble:
No matter how far afield my response might strike you, I will always offer my clue in the guise of a rhyme--a word or phrase that rhymes with the solution--that I hope will help you narrow down the possibilities on your own path to the answer.
Happy Flag Day, all!
