The opening poem contains all the words (or variations of them) from today's Jumble.

Ah, could I return to the scenes of my youth,
The exciting adventures on the screens of T.V.'s sooth!
The marvelous shows that populated prime time,
Westerns of the past, Sci-Fi's ventures of the mind.
How I would enjoy "Star Trek"; Mr. Spock, Captain Kirk!
I would wait all week just to see them at work!
See them solve knotty problems with alien races --.
Actors made up with fearsome or dainty faces!
The shows of today are no worse or better written,
And reruns of those ancient times available by clickin'.
With C.G.I. the S.F.X. far better are today.
What's different? My wonder sense has faded far away.
Liked your poem, Owen, even with the slightly sad ending. Had trouble with the third word, but found it in your poem. But had to look up the solution even though it was quite obvious as soon as I saw it. Still, a fun cartoon with all those complicated costumes. So the daily Jumble is always a pleasure.
Had no trouble with the clues, but -- again! -- fixated on a logical, but wrong, four-letter word for the solution. Fortunately it was only temporary, and I worked my way back to the correct one, a fun lol.
I too was a big fan of the original Star Trek (in spite of Shatner). But it doesn't hold up very well, IMO, compared to The Next Generation, although Voyager is probably my favorite on balance. Contrary to the cartoon protagonist, I was quite surprised at the newer Klingon makeup when I first saw it, but became accustomed to it quite soon and now see the early version as kind of superficial.
Your poem set me to thinking a lot.
Yes, the effects are much better today. Don't have a firm opinion about the writing. Maybe a bit off-topic, but this made me remember how fondly I think of the original Day The Earth Stood Still as compared to the later reworking of the idea. The story was very appealingly written, I thought, but the special effects and especially Gort the robot's costume, were incredibly cheesy. Ah well, special effects and great makeup can do a lot, but they can't write a story.
Yes, the original DtheESStill was better. THEM scared me especially when I walked home and I heard the chirping in the woods . Getting louder, getting nearer...
I had the middle word , seven remaining letters and still foundered. Then after a trip across the bay to have my BMW recall work done, lunch with an old St Pete friend, back to the dealership, rent a car to get home ... I returned to the Jumble and the Riddle-Solution popped.
In Da Nang in 1968 apparently one could get American TV. I saw some Pilots watching Star Trek
I was way to snobbish for such proletarian fare
